#515 : Best Films of the 21st Century (Part 2)

Play

In this episode, Michael, Jared, and Joe reveal their top ten films of the 21st Century so far. Arguments arise over Christopher Nolan and Claire Denis. Michael describes one of his selections as the most ambitious science movie he has ever seen. Jared notices a genre link across his top five. Joe compares one film’s twist to heroin.

Great show. Do you have your lists posted anywhere?

    • Thank you! I posted my top 25 and my next 25 on Letterboxd, but I don’t think the other guys have theirs posted anywhere. I will try to get them to do it.

Havent seen Yi Yi, but your praise suggest I should!

Looking forward to new episodes. I suggest a top 1990s episode or a top 1999 episode. Or a top underrated movies special!

    • Thanks! I love this list! Very eclectic. 2000 was an unusually strong year (my faves: Yi Yi, In the Mood for Love, Sexy Beast, Songs from the Second Floor, Traffic, Almost Famous, High Fidelity, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Werckmeister Harmonies, Memento, Code Unknown), which is why I think the debate over its inclusion raged.

I would love to do 1990s bests and most underrated list episodes, and I think Michael and Joe would, too. Stay tuned…

Thanks for listing my list and that you liked it. I knew that Blue is the Warmest Color Would get a “hell yeah” out of Joe 😉 Just a quick remark, Involuntary is the second feature by the swedish director Ruben Östlund who won this years Palme D’or for his movie The Square! I hope Involuntary is out with english subs. Its a great movie and highly recomended.

        • I’m a fan of Force Majeure and intend to see The Square at TIFF. I don’t think Involuntary has ever had a proper theatrical or DVD release in the U.S., but I can probably find a digital copy. I also need to see Play.
